What is the Data Explorer?
The Data Explorer is a powerful new way to build metrics. It allows you to quickly get insights, navigate your data. By charting directly from transactional data, you get better filter and drill and then you can use Dashboard Filters to slice and dice your metrics at the same time from the dashboard.
You can see if you are using the Data Explorer by editing an existing metric or start creating a new one and looking at the header. If it say 'Data Explorer' you are in!
You can also look at the footer of the left panel of the builder. Here is the checkbox you can use to toggle between Data Explorer and the Basic Builder.
If the “Use Data Explorer” box is checked, then you are using the Data Explorer.
What is the benefit from using the Data Explorer?
The Data Explorer makes it possible to build a dynamic metric where you can slice and filter the data to look at it in different ways to gain insights.
Some dashboards work well as a static display where you can see your progress towards a goal, but the more powerful insights come when you can dig into a chart and find what’s working well and how you are trending compared to other time periods. That is hard to do, for example, when you are only looking at total daily sales month to date. With the Data Explorer, you can change the date range to go further back and group it by month. You can even filter to show the sales for a specific sales region, rep, or product.
To use the dashboard-level filters or the filters in the metric expanded view, you will need to build metrics using the Data Explorer. Learn more about using the dashboard filters.

If you are building new metrics, here is an overview of the process using the New Metric Builder.
In March 2020 we held a webinar to help introduce creating metrics with the Data Explorer and converting metrics from the old builder. Watch it below:
